Champagne Philippe Gonet
LES MESNIL-SUR-OGER, CHAMPAGNE, FRANCE
Artisan winemakers for seven generations, the house Philippe Gonet produces top-quality Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagnes, tirelessly exploring the nuance and minerality of their family’s terroir in the heart of the Côte des Blancs since 1830.
Benchmark grower Champagne by children of the chalk.
For seven generations, the house of Philippe Gonet has been rooted in the luminous chalk soils of the Côte des Blancs, crafting Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagnes that speak with precision, minerality, and depth of place. Their story stretches back to the 18th century, with the first family cellars dug in 1783 in Mesnil-sur-Oger—an early commitment to long aging and meticulous élevage that continues to define the house style today.
Siblings Chantal and Pierre Gonet lead the domaine with a shared devotion to terroir transparency and Grand Cru viticulture. The estate’s vineyards are centered in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of Champagne’s most revered Grand Cru villages. Chardonnay dominates the vineyards, thriving in fossil-rich limestone and deep chalk subsoils that lend the wines their hallmark tension and saline finish.
Sustainable farming practices are employed across the domaine, with parcels worked without herbicides or insecticides and increasing environmental certification. A number of hectares have been converted into organic farming (certified) as well as biodynamic farming. In the cellar, vinification is parcel-driven and highly precise. Base wines are typically fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel or large oak foudres, depending on the cuvée, with many lots blocking malolactic fermentation to preserve acidity and mineral clarity.
Extended lees aging is a signature: prestige bottlings may rest five years or more sur lie, building texture, autolytic depth, and longevity. Dosage is kept deliberately low—often Extra Brut or lower—to allow the chalk terroir to speak with purity and precision. Production remains small, at approximately 180,000 bottles annually, reinforcing the house’s grower-producer ethos and artisanal scale.
Critical recognition has followed. The domaine has earned widespread critical acclaim, receiving top scores and accolades from leading international publications, including Decanter (97 points), Sommeliers Choice Awards (97 points), Robert Parker Wine Advocate (93 points), and Guide Hachette (Winegrower of the Year), among others. Across each bottling, Philippe Gonet remains devoted to exploring the nuance, luminosity, and mineral resonance of their chalk-born vineyards—crafting Champagnes that are at once deeply traditional and vividly expressive.
